Amazona autumnalis

Red-lored amazon, orRed-loredparrot (Amazona autumnalis)

Phylum —chordata
Class — aves
Order — psittaciformes
Family — psittacidae

Genus – amazona

Appearance

The Red-lored amazon is 32–35 cm (13 in) in length, with a weight of 310–480 g. The plumage is primarily green, with a red forehead and, in some subspecies, yellow cheeks (sometimes with red spots). The crown is blue. Adult males and females do not differ in plumage. Juveniles have less yellow on the cheeks, less red on the forehead, and dark irises.

Habitat

The Red-lored amazon inhabits North, Central and South America, especially from eastern Mexico to western Ecuador, with most of them being found in Panama.

Behavior

These birds are often sedentary, living in the same place for the whole year, daily moving between their roosting and nesting areas. They are gregarious and live in flocks, though during the breeding season the birds live in pairs, and are often seen flying as a pair. Their calls are loud, screeching, and unmelodic. They have the strongest calls out of Panama's three Amazonia species. Unless resting or eating, they tend to be noisy. Like all amazons, they call out an alert in the morning first thing, and then again when the sun is setting, for about 10 minutes.

Diet

The Red-lored amazons are herbivores (frugivores and granivores), they eat seeds, fruit, berries, nuts, greens, blossoms and buds.

Reproduction

Red-lored amazons are monogamous and pairs probably mate for life. Pairs mutually preen, or clean each other's feathers, and will feed their partner. Breeding is between February and April, though in Colombia and several other places it is from December. Their nest is in a hollow tree and they usually lay 2-5 white eggs, which they incubate for 20 to 32 days. Hatchlings are naked and blind. The female feeds and broods the chicks for 10 days and then the male helps. The young can leave the nest after about 60 days. Some young remain with the parents until the next mating season.

Their average lifespan is up to 80 years.

In captivity

At a minimum, a cage for a Red-lored amazon should be three-foot square. Of course, bigger is always better. Provide the largest cage you possibly can for your parrot. To keep these birds from getting restless and into trouble, time out of their cage is a must. Play gyms can provide an oasis for your amazon where it can be away from its cage and viewed as a safe perch.

Red-lored amazons have a reputation for being noisy. Potential owners should keep this in mind if they are sensitive to loud noises or have close neighbors. While training can help curb undesirable vocalizations, you can expect to deal with some screaming.

Amazons are active parrots. They should be allowed a minimum of three to four hours per day outside their cage to play and stretch their wings. These birds love to climb and chew. Provide amazon parrots plenty of toys, including ladders to climb, ropes, and swings to perch on.

These birds require sturdy toys to clutch and chew. Chewing helps them exercise their jaws and assists with the grinding down and grooming of their powerful beaks. Chewing on wooden and leather toys is an outlet for their instinct of digging for grubs in rotting wood as well as pulling on bark strips to eat or expanding a nest hole. Providing plenty of appropriately-sized toys will likely curb a lot of unwanted, potentially destructive behavior around your home.

An amazon's diet should consist primarily of high-quality pellets and the occasional healthy seed such as flaxseed, milk thistle seed, or hemp hearts. A supplement of leafy greens, root vegetables, occasional grains, and nut treats will round out a balanced diet for an amazon. To quicken your food preparation time and save some money, prepare a large batch of a supplemental mixture of vegetables and grains or "chop."

Offer chop or fresh fruits and vegetables daily. It should comprise at least 20 percent of the bird's diet. Food shouldn’t be left to linger in your bird’s cage. Any fresh foods or mashes that you place in your afmazon’s cage should be taken away when feeding time is over.
